Officer Leon ElliottOfficer Elliott is 19 years old. He is honest and naive, with a strong sense of duty. The year is 1919 and WWI has come to a close. Leon's older brother Harvey Elliott died in the trenches of France. Beatrice, Leon and Harvey's mother, was institutionalized at Sheppard Pratt after hearing of her son's death. Leon desperately believes that if only he had been there, he could have saved his brother's life. Leon was rejected from the army because he is blind in his left eye. That eye has begun to produce strange visions, something Leon doesn't completely comprehend yet.
Private Ellis Campion IVEllis, the son of a wealthy industrialist, signed up for the war effort to get away from his father and to do something noble. What Ellis didn't realize is that war is hell, and it would forever change him. He saw death, destruction, and the unexplained. He witnessed the death of Private Harvey Elliott, and though he didn't know it, Astrid's husband was the man devoured by a strange beast in front of his eyes. Ellis came to Baltimore and is a frequent fixture at the Clover Club, where he goes to drown his terrifying memories in a bottle of whiskey.
Doctor Eve KramptenEve is originally from Sweden. She studied in at the University of Heidelberg in Germany and became an accomplished psychologist at the considerably young age of 26. Her long time boyfriend Herbert Walters lived in America, and when she was ready she followed him to Baltimore, Maryland, only to catch him with another woman, another American, Rosalie Cullen. Dr. Krampten currently treats Astrid Yearout, Beatrice Elliott, and Rosalie Cullen's mom. Though she is a practical woman, she is learned in the occult and has always been drawn to the strange.
Astrid YearoutAstrid is a young Austrian girl who married her childhood sweetheart at 16. He died in the war. Astrid sewed parachutes for the war effort, which lead her to meet an American solider who fell in love with her. It was then that she had a vision of her dead husband who told her to marry the American solider. Astrid did as she was instructed: they were married and came to America after the war, though Astrid had no love for the solider. Astrid had the clarity to seek treatment at Sheppard Pratt, where she hopes Dr. Eva Krampten can help her make sense of the reason she has followed her dead husband's wishes.
Andrew Landry "A.L." RenkinAndrew is an orphan, whose parents were murdered when he was still very young. Their murders are still unsolved, which lead Andrew to become a journalist. Leon and Andrew have been friends since high school, and still stay in touch. Now, at 19, Andrew is working the prohibition beat, trying to uncover secret speakeasies and moonshiners.
Rosalie CullenRosalie is the proprietress of the Clover Club, a speakeasy on Baltimore Street. Though she is close to 30, she is obsessed with her age and losing her young beauty. She grew up running her father's bar and made connections with the influential underground, including an affair with an Irish mob boss. She throws herself at men to assert her beauty, and of the many relations she's had, most recently she had a fling with Herbert Walters, Dr. Eve Krampten's longtime boyfriend.
Olive Eberhardt-FaberOlive is an unmarried eccentric heir to a pencil factory fortune. She is a wealthy collector of oddities, but especially enjoys acquiring exotic animals. The largest animal she owns is a lion, and she feels an uncommon bond with all of her unique animals. Within her collection are some odd and strange items associated with the occult.
Annuska Pulaski aka "Rita Wentworth"Rita, as she's known, is a quiet but beautiful Polish woman. She operates as a prostitute out of the Clover Club, working with, but not for, Rosalie Cullen. Rita has a signature service: instead of submitting to the disgusting men who would use her for her body, she slips a little something poisonous in to unsuspecting customer's drinks, then she makes off with the money.
Johnathan AbelJohnathan is an orderly assistant at Sheppard Pratt, and works closely with Dr. Eve Krampten. Johnathan battles within himself a closeted homosexuality that he doesn't completely accept or understand. His entire childhood was spent suffering physical and mental abuse from his father and his strict Baptist family. There is more to quiet, helpful Johnathan than meets the eye.
Aloise SenerfelderAloise is a German WWI veteran. After the war, he came to join a circus as a strongman. One evening after a performance he is drugged and kidnapped, and comes to in a strange jail cell where his captors are using some kind of amulet to paralyze his immense strength. During the struggle to escape, his leg is blown off at point blank range by a shotgun. Leon, Andrew, and Rita, who were also held in the same strange cell, help get Aloise to the Clover Club where Dr. Krampten amputates the leg and installs a mobile peg.

Beatrice ElliottBeatrice, Leon and Harvey's mother, was institutionalized at Sheppard Pratt after hearing of her son Harvey's death in France during WWI. After Leon and Ellis find a strange cult under some of the city's row houses, they uncover a load of strange paper files on the patients of Sheppard Pratt, including Beatrice. When the pair resurfaces to confront the institution, they meet with Dr. Krampten, Johnathan, and Astrid, who had been trapped by a possessed Beatrice, her joints bent impossibly, crawling along the walls speaking of terrible things to come.
Scrimshaw"Scrimshaw," as it is known, is an entity that has claimed many forms. Currently, it is in the shape of a main coon cat. "Scrimshaw" came to Johnathan and helped him kill his abusive father. During the war, Ellis saw "Scrimshaw" in an indescribably monstrous form as he devoured Astrid's husband. Currently, Scrimshaw has come to the group and claims that he can help them uncover the mysterious cults and creatures that they all have witnessed.
